Case IH 3762 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: ECU 5 volt supply voltage is higher than expected

The engine control module monitors the 5-volt reference circuit, which supplies power to various engine sensors. This code is triggered when the module detects that the voltage on this 5V supply line has exceeded the expected threshold, usually indicating a short to a higher voltage source (like a 12V battery line) or an internal module failure.

   Perform a sensor isolation test by disconnecting 5-volt sensors (e.g., DPF pressure sensor, fuel rail pressure sensor) one at a time. If the voltage returns to a normal 5V after unplugging a specific sensor, that sensor is internally shorted.

   Inspect the engine wiring harness for chafing, rubbing, or melted insulation. Look specifically for areas where the 5-volt reference wire might be shorting against a 12-volt power supply wire.

   Perform an ECU pin output test by disconnecting the engine harness from the ECU and testing the 5-volt supply pins directly at the module. If output is significantly more than 5 volts, the ECU has an internal failure.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during testing.

   Inspect Wiring

   Visually trace the engine wiring harness from the ECU to the primary engine sensors. Repair any damaged, exposed, or melted wires using OEM-approved wiring repair techniques.

   Test and Replace Sensors

   If the diagnostic checks isolated the overvoltage condition to a specific sensor, replace that sensor and clear the fault codes.

   Replace the ECU

   If the wiring harness is intact and no sensors are shorted, but the ECU is internally outputting excessive voltage, the Engine Control Unit must be replaced.

   Reprogramming

   If the ECU is replaced, the new module must be flashed and programmed by an authorized Case IH dealer to match the machine's specific configuration.
