3767 (DTC E81D) - ECU

Case IH 3767 (DTC E81D) - ECU – Engine Controller: ECU internal failure - 'WDA active' reported due to errors in query/response communication.

Issue description

This code indicates a fatal internal processing error within the engine's computer. The "WDA" (Watchdog) safety monitoring protocol has activated because the internal microprocessors inside the ECU are failing to communicate with each other (query/response communication failure).

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines (7240, 8240, 9240)
  • Steiger series
  • Farmall series (40, 45, 50 with Cab/CVT)
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL) (SR175)

Check the cause

  1. Check for Voltage Codes: Verify that there are no active overvoltage or undervoltage codes (such as 3768 or 3769), as extreme voltage spikes can temporarily disrupt internal ECU logic.

  2. Check CAN Bus Integrity: Measure the CAN Bus C network resistance. With the machine off, a typical 2-terminator CAN Bus should read approximately 60 ohms.

  3. Perform Power and Ground Load Test: Ensure the Engine Controller Main Relay (Terminal 30) is providing clean, uninterrupted power to the ECU.

Repair steps

  1. Replace the Engine Controller

Disconnect the battery, remove the wiring harnesses from the EDC, and physically replace the Engine Controller module.

  2. Restore Parameters

Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop to the machine's diagnostic port.

  3. Flash/Program

Follow the appropriate Service Tool procedure to reload the engine dataset and restore the machine's Self-Learning Parameters to the blank ECU.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Engine Controller / Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC)

    84472188

A used ECU cannot simply be plugged in; it must be programmed with the specific engine dataset for your machine's PIN/Serial Number using the dealer EST software.
