Case IH 3770 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU internal: Diagnostic fault check to report 'WDA/ABE active' due to unknown reason

Issue description

The engine's internal microprocessor monitoring system (Watchdog/WDA) has triggered a protective state or reset due to an internal logic error, memory fault, or processing failure within the controller itself, and the exact trigger cannot be identified by the system's self-diagnostics.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • Steiger T4B
  • 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • SR175
  • Machines equipped with F5C and F5H engines

Check the cause

  1. Verify the battery voltage and ensure the charging system is operating correctly to rule out overvoltage or undervoltage causing internal logic faults

  2. Check the ECU wiring harness connectors for water intrusion, corrosion, or loose pins that could cause intermittent power loss to the microprocessor

  3. Clear the fault code using the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to determine if the code is an intermittent glitch or a hard (active) failure

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect the battery

Disconnect the battery to ensure safety before removing the module.

  2. Disconnect the wiring harness

Disconnect the wiring harness from the Engine Controller (ECU).

  3. Replace the Engine Controller

Remove and Replace the Engine Controller.

  4. Install the new Engine Controller

Install the new Engine Controller and reconnect the harnesses.

  5. Connect the EST laptop

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop to the machine's diagnostic port.

  6. Restore parameters and flash software

Follow the appropriate Service Tool procedure to restore self-learning parameters and flash the correct software/firmware for the specific machine.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) Module

Varies heavily by exact machine model and engine serial number. A new ECU will come blank or with base software. It must be programmed by an authorized Case IH dealer using the EST tool to match the machine's specific fuel injection mapping and CAN-bus configuration.
