Case IH 3773 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Controller: Boost Pressure Below The Target - Check Waste Gate, Turbocharger, Piping

Issue description

The engine control system has detected that the actual intake manifold boost pressure is lower than the target pressure commanded by the system. The underlying condition is typically a loss of charge air pressure due to a leak in the intake/exhaust piping, a stuck or damaged wastegate, or a failing turbocharger.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect all charge air piping, intercooler hoses, and clamps for leaks, cracks, or loose connections that could cause a loss of boost pressure

  2. Check the turbocharger wastegate linkage and actuator for physical damage or binding

  3. Inspect the boost pressure accumulator (integrated with the oil cooler assembly) to ensure it is intact and not leaking

  4. Check the turbocharger for internal damage, excessive shaft play, or oil leaks

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Leaks

    If any leaks are found in the intake or exhaust piping, replace the damaged hoses, pipes, or clamps.

  2. Turbocharger / Wastegate Replacement

    If the wastegate or turbocharger is found to be faulty, do not attempt to adjust or modify the wastegate actuator in any way. The turbocharger assembly (which includes the pre-calibrated wastegate) must be replaced.

  3. Remove the Old Turbocharger

    Disconnect the air intake hoses, exhaust connections, and oil feed/drain lines. Unbolt the turbocharger from the exhaust manifold.

  4. Install the New Turbocharger

    Mount the new turbocharger using new gaskets. Reconnect all oil lines and air/exhaust piping securely.

  5. Restore ECU Parameters

    Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and perform the 'Procedure To Restore Self Learning Parameters' (also noted as 'Reset Parameters Via Service Tool After Replacement') to clear the fault and allow the Engine Controller to relearn the boost control parameters.
