Case IH 3774 – Engine Control Unit (EDC / Engine ECU): Diesel particulate filter (DPF) : Volume of Ash load has exceeded the limit.

This condition indicates that the DPF has reached its maximum allowable capacity for non-combustible ash. Unlike soot, which is burned off during normal active or passive regeneration, ash is a permanent byproduct of burnt engine oil and metallic additives. Once the ash load reaches this critical limit, standard regeneration will no longer clear the filter restriction.

   Verify Ash Load via EST: Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and verify the calculated ash load percentage in the Engine ECU.

   Inspect Differential Pressure Sensors: Check the DPF differential pressure sensor and its connecting tubes. Melted, cracked, or carbon-blocked pressure tubes can cause the ECU to read an artificially high restriction, falsely triggering ash or soot load codes.

   Check for Related Codes: Scan for other active codes related to fuel pressure, fuel injectors, or the EGR system. Upstream engine issues can cause premature DPF loading.

   Preparation

   Ensure the machine is parked on a level surface, disconnect the battery, and allow the exhaust system to cool completely.

   Sensor Removal

   Carefully disconnect the exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensors and the differential pressure lines from the DPF housing.

   DPF Removal

   Loosen and remove the V-band clamps securing the DPF canister to the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and the exhaust tailpipe. Carefully extract the DPF.

   Service or Replace

   The DPF must either be replaced with a new/remanufactured unit or sent to a certified DPF cleaning facility that uses specialized pneumatic and thermal equipment to blow out the accumulated ash.

   Reinstallation

   Install the new or cleaned DPF using brand new DPF gaskets (reusing old gaskets often leads to exhaust leaks). Secure the V-band clamps and reconnect all sensors and pressure lines.

   ECU Reset (Crucial)

   Connect the CNH EST diagnostic software and perform a "DPF Ash Load Reset" or "DPF Replacement" routine. If the ECU's ash counter is not reset to zero, the code 3774 will remain active and the engine may remain in derate.

   Verification

   Run the engine and perform a stationary forced regeneration to ensure the differential pressure is within normal parameters and no exhaust leaks are present.
