Case IH 3778 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Diesel particulate filter (DPF) : Diagnostic fault check for min deviation measure from simulated and measured particulate mass.
Issue description
The engine control system calculates a simulated particulate mass (expected soot load) based on engine operating conditions and compares it to the measured particulate mass derived from the DPF differential pressure sensor. Code 3778 triggers when the measured soot load is significantly lower than the simulated soot load, exceeding the minimum allowed deviation. This typically indicates that the sensor is reading an artificially low pressure drop, often due to a sensor failure, a disconnected/leaking sensor hose, or an exhaust leak.

Check the cause
Check for accompanying codes such as 3765 (DPF pressure sensor hose line connection fault) or 3766 (DPF pressure sensor plausibility fault).
Inspect the two hoses running from the exhaust pipe to the DPF differential pressure sensor for disconnections, cracks, melting, or blockages.
Check for exhaust leaks upstream of the DPF or across the DPF housing.
Perform a sensor plausibility check using a diagnostic scan tool to monitor DPF differential pressure sensor data. With the engine off, the pressure should read zero.
Repair steps
Access the DPF Sensor
Locate the DPF differential pressure sensor, typically mounted on the frame or firewall near the DPF assembly.
Repair/Replace Hoses
If the diagnostic checks revealed cracked or melted pressure hoses, remove the damaged sections and replace them with high-temperature silicone exhaust hoses. Ensure the clamps are tight.
Replace the Sensor
If faulty, disconnect the electrical connector from the DPF pressure sensor. Remove the hose clamps and pull the upstream and downstream hoses off the sensor ports. Unbolt the sensor from its mounting bracket. Install the new sensor, reattach the hoses (ensuring the upstream and downstream lines are not swapped), and plug in the electrical connector.
Clear Codes and Reset
Connect your diagnostic tool to the machine's diagnostic port. Clear the inactive fault codes.
Perform a Forced Regeneration
Because the ECU's simulated soot mass and measured soot mass are out of sync, you must initiate a forced stationary DPF regeneration via the diagnostic tool. This will burn off the accumulated soot and reset the ECU's particulate mass calculations to zero, verifying the repair.
