Case IH 3781 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Diesel particulate filter (DPF) : DFC for Forced regeneration error.
Issue description
This code indicates a Diagnostic Fault Check (DFC) failure during the forced regeneration process of the Diesel Particulate Filter. It is often triggered when the system cannot complete a forced regeneration due to underlying fuel delivery issues, air in the fuel system, or a pressure limiting valve that is stuck open (causing fuel pressure to be too high).
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Case IH Farmall series (75C, 85C, 105C, 115C, 90N/V, 110N)
- Case IH Quantum series
- Case IH Maxxum series
- Case IH Magnum series
Check the cause
Check for air ingress by installing a clear test line at the inlet of the high-pressure fuel pump to observe for air bubbles while the engine is running.
Test fuel supply pressure by connecting a pressure gauge to the fuel system. Fuel pressure should not drop below 0.276 bar (4.0 psi) under load.
Inspect the pressure limiting valve by monitoring the rail pressure to ensure it is not stuck open.
Inspect the primary fuel filter (water separator) and secondary fuel filter for clogging or water contamination.
Inspect fuel lines and tank, checking Voss O-ring fittings for leaks and the fuel tank for debris that could block the pickup tube.
Repair steps
Resolve Fuel Restrictions
If fuel pressure is low, replace both the primary and secondary fuel filters.
Eliminate Air Leaks
If air bubbles were observed in the clear test line, replace any leaking Voss O-ring fittings or damaged fuel supply lines between the tank and the lift pump.
Clean the Fuel Tank
If debris is suspected of causing intermittent blockages, drain and clean the fuel tank completely.
Address the Pressure Limiting Valve
If diagnostics point to the pressure limiting valve being stuck open, replace the valve on the fuel rail.
Perform Forced Regeneration
Once the fuel delivery issue is resolved, connect the OEM diagnostic tool (EST). Clear the 3781 fault code and initiate a stationary forced DPF regeneration.
DPF Replacement (Worst Case)
If the DPF is irreversibly face-plugged or damaged due to repeated failed regenerations, the DPF assembly must be replaced.
