Case IH 3783 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Diesel particulate filter (DPF) : Fault path for maximum number of locked regenerations for HD
Issue description
The engine control system has attempted to initiate a DPF regeneration, but the process was locked, prevented, or aborted too many times. This is typically caused by vehicle use/ambient conditions, a sensor plausibility fault, or catalyst failure.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- tractors
- combines
- sprayers
Check the cause
Review operator habits to determine if the machine has been idling excessively or operating under very light loads, which prevents the exhaust from getting hot enough to regenerate
Using a diagnostic tool (CNH EST), monitor live data for the pre-DOC and pre-DPF exhaust gas temperature sensors to check for plausibility and artificially low readings
Evaluate the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) to see if it is degraded, face-plugged, or failing to catalyze fuel if sensors are reading correctly but temperatures do not increase
Repair steps
Resolve the Root Cause
If the issue was operator habit/low load, no parts need to be replaced. If a temperature sensor is reading out of range or shorting, replace the faulty sensor. If the DOC is failing to heat up the exhaust, the DOC/DPF assembly may require professional cleaning or replacement.
Perform a Forced Regeneration
Connect the CNH EST diagnostic laptop and command a manual/stationary forced regeneration to clear the soot load.
Clear Codes
Once the forced regeneration completes successfully and the soot mass is reduced, clear the inactive 3783 fault code from the EDC.
