Case IH 3785 (F-3525-00) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Maximum Manual Catalyst Management time exceeded for multiple attempts
Issue description
The operator or the engine management system has attempted a manual (parked) regeneration of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) multiple times, but the process has repeatedly exceeded the maximum allowed time limit without successfully completing. This typically happens when the exhaust fails to reach the required temperature to burn off accumulated soot, or when a faulty sensor provides skewed data that interrupts the regeneration cycle.
Applies to these machines
10 machines- VESTRUM CVX
- Magnum
- Puma
- Steiger
- Optum
- Maxxum
- Farmall
- Patriot 3330
- Patriot 3340
- Axial-Flow
Check the cause
Read ECU Data: Connect a diagnostic tool to check current soot load values and review the regeneration history.
Test the Differential Pressure Sensor: Check the DPF differential pressure sensor for skewed or erratic readings.
Inspect Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensors: Ensure the EGT sensors are functioning correctly. If they fail to register the correct heat levels, the ECU will abort the regeneration.
Check for Upstream Engine Issues: Inspect the EGR system, fuel injectors, and turbocharger. A malfunctioning EGR valve, boost leak, or poor combustion can create excessive soot that overloads the DPF faster than it can regenerate.
Repair steps
Resolve Underlying Faults
Repair or replace any faulty components identified during the diagnostic checks (e.g., replace a failed differential pressure sensor or EGT sensor).
Force a Stationary Regeneration
Once sensors are verified to be working, use the tractor's display menu or a diagnostic tool to force a stationary (parked) regeneration. Ensure the tractor is parked in a safe, well-ventilated area away from combustible materials.
Monitor the Cycle
Allow the engine to run through the complete cycle (which can take 45 to 90 minutes). Monitor exhaust temperatures to ensure they reach the threshold required to bake off the soot.
Clean or Replace the DPF
If the forced regeneration fails again, or if the filter is packed with incombustible ash (which cannot be burned away), the DPF must be physically removed. Send the DPF to a professional facility for pneumatic/thermal cleaning, or replace it with a new/remanufactured unit.
Reset ECU Values
After cleaning or replacing the DPF, use the diagnostic tool to reset the DPF soot load values and clear the fault codes from the ECU.
