Case IH 3789 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Controller: Automatic Regeneration Too Long - Check Exhaust Line, Perform Manual Or Service Regeneration, Check Time Interval For DPF Service For Ashes (To Check If Regeneration Duration Exceeds Maximum Allowed Duration)

The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) regeneration process is taking longer than the maximum permitted time. This typically happens when the DPF is too plugged up with soot or ash to build enough heat to bake the soot out, or there is a physical issue in the exhaust line preventing the system from completing the cycle.

   Use the Case IH EST to pull all codes to check for hidden faults (e.g., faulty exhaust gas pressure or temperature sensors) that might prevent regeneration temperatures.

   Visually inspect the exhaust piping, muffler, and DPF housing for leaks, damage, or loose sensor connections.

   Check the machine's operating hours and the time interval for DPF ash service to determine if the maximum allowed duration for ash accumulation has been exceeded.

   Perform a Forced Regeneration

   Connect the Case IH EST (Electronic Service Tool) or use the cluster interface to command a manual/service (forced) regeneration.

   Evaluate Regeneration Success

   If the forced regeneration completes successfully and the code clears, the tractor can be returned to service. If the DPF is too plugged to build heat, the regeneration will fail.

   Clean or Replace the DPF

   If the forced regen fails or the ash load is at its maximum, remove the DPF/Muffler assembly. It must either be sent to a specialized facility to be baked/cleaned of ash, or replaced entirely with a new unit.

   Reset ECU Parameters

   If the DPF is cleaned or replaced, you must use the Case IH Service Tool to reset the DPF parameters and restore the self-learning parameters. Failing to reset the ECU will cause the system to assume the old, plugged filter is still installed.
