379

Case IH 379 – ENG (Engine Controller / ECM): Front fueling current is too high.

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the electrical current being supplied to the front pumping control valve (specifically the Injection Control Valve stator) on the fuel injection pump is exceeding the normal or expected operating range. This typically points to a short circuit in the wiring harness or an internal short within the pump's stator.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the Engine Control Module (ECM) to the CAPS pump stator for rubbed wires causing a short circuit to ground or voltage.

  2. Measure the gear pump outlet pressure at the diagnostic fitting on the CAPS pump to ensure the pump is not starving for fuel (Expected minimums: 2 psi at 200 RPM, 20 psi at 700 RPM, 55 psi at 1300 RPM, 120 psi at 2200 RPM).

  3. Test the Injection Control Valve (ICV) stator on the CAPS pump for internal electrical shorts.

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Wiring Issues

If the diagnostic checks reveal a short in the wiring harness between the ECM and the CAPS pump, repair or replace the affected harness section.

  2. Replace the Stator/ICV

If the wiring is intact but the stator is internally shorted, replace the Injection Control Valve (ICV) stator on the CAPS pump.

  3. Replace or Convert the CAPS Pump

If the pump has suffered a catastrophic internal failure (which is common with CAPS systems throwing pumping element codes), the entire CAPS pump must be replaced. Alternatively, many dealers and aftermarket suppliers offer a conversion kit to replace the problematic CAPS system with a heavy-duty mechanical In-Line "P" 7100 fuel injection pump.
