Case IH 38 – Transmission ECM: Clutch Pack (B) Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) Solenoid or ECM Driver Short Circuit to 12 Volts

Issue description

While the tractor is being operated, the Clutch Pack (B) PWM solenoid becomes unintentionally energized due to a short circuit to a 12-volt power source.

Applies to these machines

  • JXC
  • JX
  • JXU
  • Farmall
  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • TN75A
  • TN75D

Check the cause

  1. Inspect wiring harness for faulty or chafed wiring

  2. Test for a circuit shorted to 12 volts between Transmission ECM connector 1, pin 11 and the solenoid coil terminal

  3. Test for a short across the two solenoid coil terminals

  4. Test for a short between ECM connector 1, pin 5 and the solenoid coil terminal

  5. Check the resistance of the Clutch Pack (B) PWM solenoid coil to ensure it has not failed internally

  6. Test the ECM driver for an internal short if the wiring and solenoid test within specification

Repair steps

  1. Turn the starter key to the OFF position.

  2. Gain access to the transmission solenoid valve block.

Depending on the specific tractor model, this may require removing the rear left-hand wheel and the solenoid valves unit guard.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector on the Clutch Pack (B) PWM solenoid.

  4. Repair the damaged section of the harness or replace the harness.

Perform this if a wiring short was found during diagnostics.

  5. Unbolt and remove the Clutch Pack (B) PWM solenoid from the transmission control valve assembly.

Perform this if the solenoid coil is faulty.

  6. Coat the new solenoid valve components with clean transmission oil (e.g., Case IH Akcela Nexplore fluid) prior to assembly.

  7. Install the new solenoid and tighten the retaining bolts to the OEM torque specification.

    Typically 27 Nm / 20 ft. lbs.

  8. Reconnect the wiring harness and reinstall any guards or wheels removed for access.

  9. Clear the error code using the tractor's Customer Display Unit (CDU) or the Electronic Service Tool (EST).

The cause must be resolved before clearing the code.
