3803

Case IH 3803 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): EDC - ECU internal: Error on R2S2 module (Low-Level Chip driver for the Power stage-Chips)

Issue description

Internal hardware failure within the engine's computer. The R2S2 module is a low-level chip driver responsible for managing the power stages, which control actuators like fuel injectors and metering units.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Steiger tractors
  • Magnum tractors
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • SR175
  • SV250

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the battery voltage is within normal operating parameters (12V-14V) to rule out low voltage or severe voltage spikes causing internal chip errors

  2. Inspect the main wiring harness connectors at the ECU for bent pins, pushed-out terminals, corrosion, or water ingress that could be shorting the power stage drivers

  3. Verify that the ECU is receiving clean power and solid grounds on all dedicated supply pins

  4. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), clear the fault code, and cycle the key. If the code immediately returns, the ECU has permanently failed

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Locate the ECU

Locate the Engine Control Unit, typically mounted directly to the side of the engine block or on the firewall.

  3. Remove the ECU

Carefully release the locking levers on the ECU wiring harness connectors and unplug them. Remove the mounting bolts securing the ECU to its bracket and remove the faulty unit.

  4. Install the New ECU

Mount the replacement ECU and tighten the securing bolts. Reconnect the wiring harness connectors, ensuring the locking levers seat fully.

  5. Reconnect Power

    Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  6. Programming

Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to flash the correct engine firmware, input the machine's serial number, and write the specific fuel injector trim codes (IQA codes) into the new ECU.

  7. Restore Parameters

Use the service tool to restore self-learning parameters and clear any residual codes. Run the engine to verify the repair.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Controller

    5802513624R

Order based on your machine's specific Engine Serial Number (ESN) and Machine PIN. Do not install a used ECU from a different machine without verifying compatibility and reprogramming it via the CNH EST.
