Case IH 3805 (DTC 1D85) - ECU – Engine ECU: Maximum rail pressure exceeded
Issue description
Fuel pressure within the high-pressure common rail has spiked above the safe or commanded limit set by the engine control system.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines (7240, 8240, 9240)
- Puma series
- Magnum series (215, 245, 275, 305, 335)
- Steiger / STX series
- Farmall series
Check the cause
Check the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor raw values using a diagnostic tool for erratic, intermittent, or incorrect readings that might falsely report a high-pressure spike.
Inspect the Fuel Metering Unit (FCA / M-PROP) wiring harness for a short circuit to the battery (high side) or a short circuit to ground.
Check if the mechanical Fuel Pressure Relief Valve on the fuel rail has been forced open (look for secondary code 3105 / DTC F245).
Repair steps
Verify Codes
Connect your diagnostic tool and confirm that 3805 (1D85) is active. Check for related electrical fault codes regarding the fuel metering unit or pressure sensor.
Inspect Wiring
Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors at the Fuel Metering Unit (on the injection pump) and the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor (on the fuel rail). Look for chafing, corrosion, or disconnected pins.
Test/Replace the Fuel Metering Unit
If the wiring is intact, the fuel metering unit is the most common cause of an actual over-pressure event (sticking open). Test the solenoid resistance. If it is faulty or mechanically stuck, replace the unit.
Test/Replace the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor
If diagnostic readings show maximum pressure when the engine is off, the sensor has failed and must be replaced.
Replace the Fuel Pressure Relief Valve
If the rail pressure actually exceeded the maximum limit, the mechanical pressure relief valve on the fuel rail popped to protect the system. Once forced open, these valves frequently weaken, fail to seat properly, and cause low rail pressure/hard starting issues later. It should be replaced.
Clear Codes
After replacing the faulty component(s), clear the ECU fault codes and run the engine to verify that the rail pressure tracks the commanded setpoint without exceeding limits.
