Case IH 3806 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Rail system : Rail pressure reduction by blank shots during after run (BSA) aborted during post drive of ECU

Issue description

When a common-rail diesel engine is shut down, the high-pressure fuel rail remains pressurized. To safely depressurize the system, the Engine Control Unit (ECU) enters a "post drive" or "after run" phase where it fires "blank shots" (pulsing the injectors just enough to bleed off fuel pressure without causing combustion). Code 3806 is logged when this automated pressure reduction process is aborted or fails to complete successfully before the ECU powers down.

Check the cause

  1. Check battery and power supply for low voltage or poor ground connections that might cause the ECU to power down prematurely

  2. Check the low-pressure fuel lines and filters for blockages or restrictions

  3. Inspect the fuel supply for air leaks, which can cause instability in fuel pressure readings

  4. Monitor the rail pressure sensor to ensure the raw value is not intermittent or reading out of range

  5. Check the fuel leakage rate from the electronically controlled injectors and verify the pressure control of the high-pressure pump inlet regulator (Fuel Metering Unit)

Repair steps

  1. Verify Electrical Integrity

    Test the batteries, clean the battery terminals, and inspect the ECU wiring harness and relays. Ensure the ECU is maintaining power for the required duration after the key is turned off.

  2. Inspect the Low-Pressure System

    Connect clear tubing to the fuel lines to observe for air bubbles in the system. Replace the fuel pre-filter and main fuel filters if there is any sign of restriction.

  3. Monitor Rail Pressure

    Connect a diagnostic tool and monitor the fuel rail pressure. Run the engine, then shut it down. Observe if the pressure bleeds down normally or if the sensor data drops out/spikes erratically.

  4. Test/Replace Faulty Fuel Components

    If the rail pressure sensor is providing erratic data, replace it. If the Fuel Metering Unit (M-Prop) or the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) is mechanically sticking and preventing the pressure from bleeding off, replace the faulty valve.

  5. Clear and Retest

    Clear the fault code using the diagnostic tool. Run the machine under load, shut it down, and verify that the ECU successfully completes the post-drive blank shots without the code returning.
