Case IH 3808 – ENGINE ECU (EDC - Electronic Diesel Control module): Fuel System: High Pressure Pump Fuel Quantity Not Plausible At Low Idle

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit has detected that the fuel metering unit's set point in idle mode is not plausible. The expected fuel quantity at low idle does not match the actual parameters required to maintain rail pressure, leading to symptoms such as a decrease in engine performance, rough idling, or engine stalling.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • skid steer
  • SV250
  • SV300
  • SR220
  • SR250
  • TR320
  • TV380
  • 580N
  • 580SN
  • 580SN WT
  • 580SV
  • Farmall series
  • 95U
  • 105U
  • 115U

Check the cause

  1. Check for a clogged fuel filter or water separator

  2. Inspect for any leakage in the high-pressure fuel system (lines, rail, and fittings)

  3. Examine the low-pressure pump hydraulic circuit for proper supply pressure

  4. Assess the high-pressure pump for low efficiency or internal wear

  5. Check the fuel injectors for tightness and proper sealing

Repair steps

  1. Replace fuel filters

Replace the primary and secondary fuel filters/water separators to rule out fuel starvation caused by clogs.

  2. Address high-pressure leaks

If leaks are found in the high-pressure system, tighten fittings to spec or replace damaged high-pressure lines and rails.

  3. Test and replace low-pressure pump

Test the low-pressure fuel delivery pump; if it is not supplying adequate pressure to the high-pressure pump, replace the low-pressure pump.

  4. Test injectors

If the filters and low-pressure circuit are good, and no external leaks are present, test the injectors. Ensure they are seated tightly and not bypassing excessive fuel to the return line.

  5. Replace high-pressure fuel pump

If all other components pass inspection, the high-pressure fuel pump is likely suffering from low efficiency and must be replaced.
