Issue description

This indicates that the engine's exhaust aftertreatment system is failing to properly burn off accumulated soot, or the system is detecting that the DPF is not functioning at the required efficiency level to meet emissions standards.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying DPF sensor codes (such as 3796, 3797, or 3798) that might be causing a false low efficiency reading

  2. Physically inspect the hoses running from the exhaust to the DPF differential pressure sensor for clogs, melting, or cracks

  3. Ensure the upstream and downstream DPF temperature sensors are reading correctly (check for related codes like 3838, 3839, or 3840)

  4. Inspect the exhaust piping upstream of the DPF for leaks that could lower the exhaust pressure and prevent the filter from reaching regeneration temperatures

  5. Use a diagnostic tool (like Case IH EST or Jaltest) to check the current soot load percentage in the DPF

Repair steps

  1. Attempt a Forced Regeneration

    Connect your diagnostic software (Case IH EST or Jaltest) and initiate a 'Forced DPF Regeneration' (also known as a parked or service regeneration). This is required when soot builds up to a point where the engine enters limp mode and cannot passively regenerate.

  2. Monitor Sensor Data

    During the forced regeneration, monitor the DPF inlet/outlet temperatures and the differential pressure sensor. Temperatures must reach the required threshold to burn off the soot.

  3. Address Sensor Failures

    If the regeneration fails to start or aborts, and sensor data is erratic, replace the faulty DPF differential pressure sensor or temperature sensor, clear the codes, and restart the regeneration process.

  4. Clean or Replace the DPF

    If the forced regeneration is unsuccessful, or if the diagnostic tool indicates the filter is overloaded beyond recovery (ash accumulation), the DPF must be removed. It will either need to be sent to a specialized facility for professional pneumatic/thermal cleaning or replaced entirely.

  5. Reset Aftertreatment Values

    If the DPF is replaced or cleaned, use the diagnostic tool to reset the DPF ash/soot accumulators in the ECU so the system knows a clean filter has been installed.
