Case IH 3819 – Engine Control Unit (Engine ECU / EDC): Throttle Valve Actuator (TVA) Circuit - Over Current Error For H-Bridge

The H-Bridge is the electronic circuit inside the control module that controls the direction and power of the DC motor within the Throttle Valve Actuator. An "over current" error means the actuator motor is drawing more electrical amperage than the system's safe threshold allows. This is typically caused by a mechanical bind in the throttle valve flap (such as heavy carbon buildup or ice), a short circuit within the actuator's internal motor, or a short in the wiring harness.

   Disconnect the intake piping from the Throttle Valve Actuator and visually inspect the throttle flap for excessive carbon/soot buildup, debris, or ice that could cause the valve to jam.

   Gently attempt to move the throttle flap manually (if accessible) to ensure it moves freely without mechanical binding.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Engine ECU and the Throttle Valve Actuator for chafing, melted insulation, or short circuits to ground/battery. Pay special attention to the engine ECU 60-pin connector (pins A34 and A49).

   Test the electrical resistance of the Throttle Valve Actuator motor pins with a multimeter to check for an internal short circuit.

   Disconnect battery

   Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

   Clean throttle body

   If the diagnostic checks revealed carbon buildup or a stuck flap, thoroughly clean the throttle body using an appropriate intake/EGR solvent. Ensure the flap moves smoothly. Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic service tool, and cycle the key to see if the code returns.

   Determine if replacement is needed

   If the wiring is intact, the flap is clean, but the 3819 over-current code persists, the internal H-Bridge motor of the actuator is shorted and the unit must be replaced.

   Disconnect electrical connector

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the Throttle Valve Actuator.

   Unbolt Throttle Valve Actuator

   Unbolt the Throttle Valve Actuator from the intake manifold/piping.

   Clean mating surface

   Clean the mating surface on the intake manifold.

   Install new Throttle Valve Actuator

   Install the new Throttle Valve Actuator with a new gasket/O-ring.

   Torque mounting bolts

   Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

   Reconnect components

   Reconnect the electrical connector and the intake piping.

    Verify repair

    Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes, and run the engine to verify the repair.
