Case IH 3829 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: ECU Power stages : Throttle valve actuator power stage: Over temperature

Issue description

The internal H-bridge driver (the power stage) inside the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has exceeded its maximum temperature threshold while attempting to operate the Throttle Valve Actuator (TVA). This usually means the actuator motor is drawing excessive electrical current, most commonly caused by a mechanically stuck/binding throttle flap (due to carbon or debris) or an internal electrical short in the actuator itself.

Check the cause

  1. Mechanical Binding Check: Remove the intake air tube connected to the Throttle Valve Actuator. Inspect the valve flap for heavy carbon buildup, soot, or foreign debris. Attempt to move the valve manually (if applicable) to ensure it is not physically jammed. A stuck valve forces the motor to work harder, drawing high current and overheating the ECU driver.

  2. Wiring Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU (specifically the 60-pin connector) and the TVA. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or moisture in the connectors. Test the TVA control circuits (e.g., ECU pins A34 and A49 on F5C engines) for shorts to ground, shorts to battery, or high resistance.

  3. Actuator Electrical Test: Test the internal resistance of the TVA motor/solenoid to check for an internal short circuit.

  4. ECU Verification: If the wiring harness tests perfectly and the TVA is replaced but the code persists, the ECU's internal H-bridge driver may have suffered permanent thermal damage and the ECU may require replacement.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to protect the ECU from voltage spikes.

  2. Locate TVA

    Locate the Throttle Valve Actuator (TVA) on the engine's air intake manifold.

  3. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the TVA.

  4. Remove intake tube

    Loosen the retaining clamps and remove the intake air tube connected to the TVA assembly.

  5. Remove mounting bolts

    Remove the mounting bolts (typically 4 bolts) securing the TVA to the intake manifold.

  6. Remove old TVA

    Remove the old TVA and discard the old gasket/seal.

  7. Clean mating surface

    Clean the mating surface on the intake manifold thoroughly, ensuring no carbon or gasket debris falls into the engine intake.

  8. Install new TVA

    Install the new Throttle Valve Actuator with a new gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications (typically 20 - 30 N·m or 15 - 22 lb ft for F5 engines).

  9. Reinstall intake tube

    Reinstall the intake air tube and tighten the clamps.

  10. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the TVA electrical connector.

  11. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery.

  12. Clear codes and verify

    Turn the key on and use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible scanner to clear the fault codes. Start the engine and verify the code does not return.
