Case IH 3830 – ENGINE: Throttle Valve Actuator - DFC for valve position sensor physical SRC high

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is receiving a signal voltage from the Throttle Valve Actuator (TVA) position sensor that exceeds the maximum expected physical range, indicating a Short Circuit to a High voltage source.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • skid steer
  • SR175
  • SV280B
  • SV300
  • TR270B
  • TV370B
  • Farmall 95U Pro EP
  • Farmall 105U Pro EP
  • Farmall 115U Pro EP
  • Puma
  • Steiger

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors running between the Engine ECU and the Throttle Valve Actuator (TVA) for chafed wires, melted insulation, or corrosion inside the connector pins.

  2. Disconnect the TVA harness, turn the key ON (engine off), and use a multimeter to check the signal wire for voltage. If battery voltage (12V) or an abnormally high reference voltage is present, the wiring harness has a short to power and must be repaired.

  3. If the wiring harness tests normal (no short to power in the harness), the short is likely internal to the Throttle Valve Actuator's position sensor.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the battery ground cable. Note: OEM manuals stress that the electronic monitoring system can be damaged if the battery is not disconnected before major electrical work.

  2. Locate the TVA

Locate the Throttle Valve Actuator on the engine's intake air circuit.

  3. Disconnect Harness

Unplug the electrical connector from the TVA.

  4. Remove the Actuator

Remove the mounting hardware securing the TVA to the intake manifold/piping. Remove the faulty valve.

  5. Prep the Surface

Clean the mating surface on the intake manifold to ensure a proper seal.

  6. Install the New Part

Install the new Throttle Valve Actuator along with a new gasket/seal. Torque the mounting hardware to OEM specifications.

  7. Reconnect

Plug the electrical connector back into the new TVA and reconnect the battery ground cable.

  8. Clear Codes

Connect a diagnostic tool to the machine, clear the inactive 3830 fault code, and run the engine to verify the repair.
