Case IH 3838 (F-4765-04) – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): Upstream oxidation catalyst temperature sensor voltage is lower than expected.

Issue description

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the sensor located just before the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) that falls below the minimum acceptable threshold. This condition is almost always caused by a short circuit to ground in the sensor's internal circuitry, a short to ground in the wiring harness, or a completely failed sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the Fault: Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) or PT-Box Tool to confirm the fault is currently active.

  2. Visual Inspection: Locate the upstream DOC temperature sensor on the exhaust aftertreatment system. Inspect the sensor body and the wiring harness for physical damage, melting, or chafing.

  3. Circuit Testing: Disconnect the sensor. Check the harness connector pins. Pin 1 should provide a 5-volt reference supply from the ECU, and Pin 2 should be the common ground to the ECU. Test the signal wire for a short to ground. If the wiring harness is shorted, the harness must be repaired or replaced rather than the sensor.

  4. Sensor Resistance Check: Measure the resistance across the sensor pins. If the resistance is out of specification (or shows a dead short), the sensor has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes. Ensure the exhaust system has completely cooled down to avoid severe burns.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Find the upstream temperature sensor located on the exhaust pipe just before the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) chamber.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor harness.

  4. Removal

    Using an appropriate sensor socket or wrench, carefully unthread the temperature sensor from the exhaust bung. (Penetrating oil may be required if the sensor is seized).

  5. Installation

    Apply a small amount of high-temperature anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (if it does not come pre-applied). Do not get anti-seize on the sensor probe tip.

  6. Torque

    Thread the new sensor in by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the OEM torque specification.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the sensor's electrical connector back into the machine's wiring harness. Ensure the locking tab clicks into place.

  8. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and use your diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 3838 fault code. Start the engine and monitor the DOC upstream temperature data to verify the repair.
