Case IH 3844 – ENGINE ECU: Zero Fuel Calibration by Lambda (ZFL): DFC reporting error state on comparing energizing time to Max value injector 1.
Issue description
The engine control system performs a "Zero Fuel Calibration" (ZFC) to monitor and adjust the minute pilot injection quantities for each cylinder. Fault code 3844 indicates an error in the plausibility of the energizing times for this calibration on Cylinder 1. Specifically, the energizing time required to actuate Injector 1 has exceeded the maximum allowable value. This condition is typically caused by one of two things: incorrect injector programming (the wrong IMA code is flashed to the ECU) or an internal mechanical/electrical defect within the injector itself.

Check the cause
Verify Injector Programming (incorrect programming cause): Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) with Easy-Engine software. Check that the 9-digit injector code (IMA code) programmed into the ECU for Cylinder 1 exactly matches the physical code printed on Injector 1.
Inspect Wiring (electrical defect cause): Disconnect the engine harness from the injector. Inspect all connectors, pins, and the wiring harness for corrosion, bent pins, short circuits, or wire breaks.
Fuel System Integrity (fuel supply cause): Check for air ingress in the fuel supply using a clear test line. Verify fuel supply pressure to the high-pressure pump and check for fuel inlet/return restrictions.
Leakage Test (internal mechanical defect cause): Check the fuel leakage rate from the electronically controlled injectors to isolate excessive return flow from Injector 1.
Repair steps
Reprogram if Necessary
If the EST reveals that the injector code in the ECU does not match the physical injector, re-flash/program the correct IMA code into the ECU. Clear the code and test run the machine.
Replace the Injector
If the programming is correct, the wiring is intact, and fuel pressure is within specification, Injector 1 has an internal defect and must be replaced.
Code the New Injector
After physically installing the new injector, you must use the EST to program the new 9-digit IMA code (found on the top of the new injector) into the ECU.
Restore Self-Learning Parameters
Once the new injector is coded, use the EST to perform the appropriate service tool procedure to restore the engine's self-learning parameters (Zero Fuel Calibration).
