Case IH 3848 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / EDC): Zero Fuel Calibration by Lambda (ZFL): DFC reporting error state on comparing energizing time to Min value injector 1.
Issue description
The ECU monitors the exact energizing time required to deliver a minimum pilot injection of fuel. Code 3848 triggers when the energizing time for Cylinder 1 Fuel Injector falls outside the acceptable minimum threshold (Diagnostic Fault Check - DFC). This typically indicates a mechanical degradation of the injector, excessive fuel return/leakage, or an electrical resistance issue altering the injector's response time.

- skid steer loaders
Check the cause
Check the low-pressure fuel supply for restrictions. Vacuum between the lift pump and tank should not exceed 2 inches of Hg, and fuel pressure must not drop below 4.0 psi (0.276 bar) during operation.
Install a clear test line on the fuel inlet to observe for air bubbles entering the system, which can cause erratic injector firing.
Inspect the wiring harness for Cylinder 1 for chafing, shorts to ground, or open circuits (often associated with related DTCs like 161 or 167).
Perform an injector leak-off test to check the fuel leakage rate and isolate if Injector 1 is bypassing excessive fuel back to the return line.
Repair steps
Relieve Fuel System Pressure
Ensure the engine is off and the high-pressure common rail has depressurized before opening any lines.
Inspect and Replace Filters
If low fuel pressure was noted during diagnostics, replace the primary (vacuum side) and secondary (pressure side) fuel filters. Clear any blockages in the fuel inlet.
Repair Wiring
If electrical testing revealed high resistance to Injector 1, repair the harness or replace the injector connector pigtail.
Replace Injector 1
If fuel supply and electrical circuits are sound, the injector itself has mechanically failed. Remove the high-pressure fuel line to Cylinder 1, remove the injector hold-down clamp, and extract Injector 1. Clean the injector bore in the cylinder head. Install the new injector with a new copper sealing washer and O-ring. Torque the hold-down clamp and high-pressure lines to OEM specifications.
ECU Programming
Enter the new injector's calibration code (IQA code) into the Engine ECU using a diagnostic tool (like the CNH Electronic Service Tool) so the ECU can properly calibrate the new injector's energizing time.
Bleed and Test
Prime the fuel system using the hand primer pump. Start the engine, check for leaks, and clear the 3848 fault code.
