Case IH 3848 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Injector cylinder 1 - energizing time too low
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) monitors the precise amount of time (pulse width) required to energize the fuel injectors during the "Zero Fuel Calibration" process. Code 3848 is triggered when the energizing time for the fuel injector in Cylinder 1 falls below the minimum acceptable threshold. This typically indicates that the injector programming/calibration data in the ECU is incorrect, the ECU was flashed improperly, or there is an internal mechanical/electrical defect within the injector itself.

Check the cause
Verify Injector Calibration Codes: Using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and the Easy-Engine software, read the injector calibration code currently programmed into the ECU for Cylinder 1.
Physical Verification: Inspect the physical fuel injector installed in Cylinder 1. Compare the alphanumeric calibration code stamped on the top/side of the injector body with the code programmed in the ECU.
Check ECU History: Determine if the ECU was recently replaced, updated, or flashed. A wrong flash can load incorrect baseline injector data.
Harness Inspection: Inspect the engine wiring harness and the connector at Injector 1 for corrosion, bent pins, or wire chafing that could cause intermittent resistance drops.
Repair steps
Reprogram the ECU (If codes do not match)
If the physical code on Injector 1 does not match the code stored in the ECU, use the EST to reprogram the ECU with the correct injector code for that specific cylinder.
Clear and Retest
Clear the 3848 fault code. Run the engine through a standard operating cycle to allow the ECU to perform its Zero Fuel Calibration. If the code does not return, the issue was purely software/programming.
Replace the Injector (If codes match but fault persists)
If the programmed code is correct but the fault returns, the injector has an internal defect and cannot achieve the proper energizing time.
Remove Injector 1
Depressurize the fuel system. Disconnect the high-pressure fuel line and the electrical connector. Remove the injector hold-down clamp and extract the injector.
Install New Injector
Install the replacement injector with a new copper sealing washer and O-rings. Note: OEM guidelines generally dictate that the high-pressure fuel line connecting the common rail to the injector should be replaced once loosened, as they are often single-use crush-fit lines.
Program the New Injector
You must use the CNH EST to enter the new injector's unique calibration code into the ECU. Failing to do so will immediately trigger calibration fault codes.
Final Verification
Clear all codes, bleed the fuel system if necessary, and test run the machine under load to verify the repair.
