Case IH 3849 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Zero Fuel Calibration by Lambda (ZFL): DFC reporting error state on comparing energizing time to Min value injector 2.
Issue description
The engine control module uses the exhaust Lambda (oxygen) sensor to perform a "Zero Fuel Calibration." This process continuously adjusts the minimum energizing time for the fuel injectors to compensate for normal wear over time. Fault code 3849 triggers when the required energizing time for Injector 2 hits the absolute minimum allowable limit, or the system detects an error state during the comparison. This typically means one of two things: the injector trim code programmed into the ECU is incorrect, or Injector 2 has an internal mechanical defect (such as a worn nozzle or internal leak) that is causing it to flow too much fuel, forcing the ECU to pull the energizing time down to the minimum limit.

Check the cause
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) / Easy-Engine software to the machine's diagnostic port.
Navigate to the injector programming menu and read the trim code currently programmed for Injector 2 (verify firing order/cylinder mapping in your specific manual).
Visually inspect the physical trim code printed on the top of Injector 2.
If the codes do not match (often caused by a previous ECU flash error or an undocumented injector swap), reprogram the ECU with the correct code and test run the machine.
Check the wiring harness to Injector 2 for any chafing or shorts to ground/battery, as degraded wiring can sometimes skew calibration data.
Repair steps
Depressurize
Turn off the battery disconnect and ensure the high-pressure fuel system is completely depressurized.
Access
Remove the valve cover or injector access panels depending on the specific FPT engine model.
Disconnect
Remove the high-pressure fuel line running from the fuel rail to Injector 2. Cap the rail fitting immediately to prevent contamination. Disconnect the electrical solenoid connector.
Remove
Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt. Carefully extract Injector 2 using an injector puller if necessary.
Clean
Thoroughly clean the injector bore, ensuring no carbon buildup or old copper washers are left at the bottom of the cup.
Install
Install the new injector equipped with a new O-ring and a new copper sealing washer.
Torque
Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque to the OEM specification. Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line and torque to spec.
Program
Reconnect the CNH EST diagnostic tool. You must write the new injector's trim code (found on the new injector body) into the ECU memory. Failure to do this will result in the return of calibration fault codes.
Test
Prime the fuel system, start the engine, and bring it up to operating temperature to verify the fault code is cleared and the engine runs smoothly.
