Case IH 3852 – ENGINE ECU: Lambda sensor: The maximum allowed time for blow out is exceeded.
Issue description
The Lambda (oxygen) sensor utilizes an internal heating element to "blow out" or burn off accumulated soot, moisture, and condensation from the sensor tip so it can accurately read exhaust gases. This fault code is triggered when the engine control module detects that the sensor's heater is taking longer than the maximum programmed time limit to reach the required temperature or clear the sensor. This typically indicates a failing internal heater circuit, excessive exhaust soot fouling the sensor, or a wiring issue.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and the connector leading to the Lambda sensor for melted wires, chafing, corrosion, or loose pins that could cause high resistance.
Inspect the exhaust system near the sensor for leaks or excessive soot fouling (caused by over-fueling or DPF issues) preventing the heater from burning off soot in time.
Test the heater circuit using a multimeter to check the resistance across the heater pins on the sensor itself. An open circuit or out-of-spec resistance confirms the internal heater has failed.
Check for ECU software updates using a diagnostic tool, as OEM updates sometimes adjust the timeout parameters for the sensor blow-out phase.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery via the master disconnect switch. Ensure the exhaust system has completely cooled down to prevent severe burns.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the Lambda sensor on the exhaust system. It is typically mounted downstream of the turbocharger, near the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) or Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).
Clear Access
If necessary, loosen or remove any exhaust heat shields or bonnet supports blocking access to the sensor.
Disconnect Wiring
Carefully unplug the electrical connector for the Lambda sensor from the main engine harness.
Remove the Sensor
Using a specialized O2 sensor socket (usually 22mm or 7/8"), loosen and remove the sensor. If it is seized, apply penetrating oil to the threads and allow it to soak before applying force to avoid stripping the exhaust bung threads.
Install the New Sensor
Apply a small amount of high-temperature anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (if it does not come pre-applied). Thread it in by hand to prevent cross-threading, then torque it to the manufacturer's specification.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical connector and reinstall any heat shields that were removed.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn on the ignition, and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 3852 fault code. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature to verify the code does not return.
