Case IH 3854 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Lambda sensor : Oxygen concentration implausibly low in full load operation

The engine's Lambda (oxygen) sensor is detecting an abnormally low level of oxygen in the exhaust stream when the engine is operating under full load. Technically, this points to a rich air-fuel mixture (excess fuel or insufficient air) or a malfunctioning sensor providing inaccurate data to the system.

   Check the supply voltage and the signal voltage of the Lambda sensor to ensure they are within specification

   Inspect the sensor's wiring harness and connectors for faults, shorts, or corrosion

   Verify that there are no restrictions in the air intake system (diagnosing a rich condition)

   Test the fuel supply pressure and check for leaking electronically controlled injectors

   Check the exhaust and EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) systems for proper operation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and allow the exhaust system to cool completely.

   Disconnect the battery to safeguard the electronic control modules.

   Locate the Lambda sensor on the exhaust system.

   Often near the EGR exhaust treatment area or downstream of the turbocharger.

   If equipped, loosen and remove the system heat shield to gain access to the sensor.

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the Lambda sensor.

   Using an oxygen sensor socket or wrench, carefully unscrew the Lambda sensor from the exhaust pipe.

   Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (if not pre-applied).

   Be careful not to contaminate the sensor tip.

   Install the new Lambda sensor and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.

   Reconnect the electrical connector and reinstall the heat shield.

    Reconnect the battery.

    Turn on the ignition and use the tractor's diagnostic keypad (Menu/Enter key) or a service tool to access the WARNING SYMBOLS screen and clear the stored fault codes.

    Start the engine and run it under load to verify the fault code does not return.
