Case IH 3859 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): EVGT actuator plausibility
Issue description
This code indicates a plausibility error with the Electronically-controlled Variable Geometry Turbocharger (eVGT) actuator. The engine control system has detected that the actuator's reported position, movement, or electrical response does not match the commanded position or expected operating parameters.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- Optum series (e.g., Optum 300 CVT)
- Magnum series
- Steiger series
- Puma series
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
- Machines utilizing FPT Cursor 11, Cursor 13, and NEF engines
Check the cause
Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to confirm the fault code is present and active.
Verify the power supply and ground to the EVGT actuator, including the dedicated 20A mini fuse (e.g., F-203 on Optum models).
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the EVGT actuator and the ECU for damage, short circuits, open circuits, or CAN timeout errors.
Inspect the EVGT mechanical linkage to see if it is disconnected, damaged, sticking, or blocked.
Check if the actuator is reporting high motor effort or overheating, which indicates the variable geometry vanes inside the turbocharger may be seized with soot or carbon.
Repair steps
Resolve Electrical/Wiring Issues
If diagnostic checks reveal a blown fuse, short circuit, or broken CAN wire, repair the wiring harness or replace the fuse.
Free or Replace Linkage
If the external EVGT linkage is binding or damaged, attempt to free it, clean it, or replace the damaged linkage components.
Replace the EVGT Actuator
If the wiring is intact and the linkage moves freely, but the actuator has an internal failure, a defective CAN controller, or is reporting an offset/plausibility error, the EVGT actuator must be replaced.
Inspect/Replace Turbocharger
If the variable geometry vanes inside the turbocharger are heavily carbon-packed and seized (causing the actuator to overwork and fail), the turbocharger assembly itself may need to be cleaned or replaced.
Clear Codes and Test
After repairs, use the EST to clear the fault codes and perform a test run under load to verify the plausibility error does not return.
