Case IH 386 – Engine Controller (ENG / ECM): 5 Volt Sensor Supply voltage is too high

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) provides a regulated 5.0 VDC (± 0.16 VDC) power supply to various engine sensors. This fault is triggered when the ECM detects that the voltage on this supply circuit has exceeded the normal threshold (typically greater than 5.25 volts). This condition is usually caused by the 5-volt circuit shorting to a higher voltage source in the wiring harness, an internally shorted sensor, or a failure of the ECM's internal voltage regulator.

Check the cause

  1. Perform a sensor isolation test by disconnecting 5-volt sensors one at a time to see if the supply voltage drops back to a normal 5.0V

  2. Visually inspect the engine wiring harness for chafing, melting, or pinched wires that could cause the 5V supply wire to short against a 12V power wire

  3. Perform an ECM output test by disconnecting the engine harness and measuring voltage directly at the ECM's 5V supply pin (Pin A10)

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery to prevent accidental shorts during testing.

  6. If the voltage remains high with all sensors disconnected, turn the key off and disconnect the main engine harness from the ECM.
