3860

Case IH 3860 – Engine Control Module (ECM): EVGT command timeout

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has lost communication with the smart EVGT actuator over the CAN bus (Engine Components CAN C network), or the actuator failed to respond to an ECM command within the expected timeframe.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum Series (250, 280, 310, 340, 380)
  • Optum CVXDrive Series
  • Steiger Series
  • Puma Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify active faults using the Electronic Service Tool (EST) and check for other related EVGT electrical faults (e.g., 3861, 3862, 3864).

  2. Inspect the dedicated EVGT actuator fuse and relay (e.g., Fuse F-203 on Optum models).

  3. Disconnect the engine harness from the EVGT actuator and the ECM to inspect connector pins for pushed-out terminals, corrosion, or moisture.

  4. Use a multimeter to test the CAN bus and wiring harness between the ECM and EVGT actuator for open circuits, high resistance, or shorts.

  5. Turn the ignition switch ON and verify that the actuator connector is receiving proper operating voltage from the harness.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the ignition switch and disconnect the battery ground cable.

  2. Resolve Power Issues

If a blown fuse or faulty relay was discovered during the diagnostic phase, replace the component and retest the system.

  3. Repair Wiring

Repair or replace any damaged sections of the engine wiring harness or connectors between the ECM and the turbo actuator.

  4. Replace Actuator/Turbo

If the wiring, power, and ground are verified as good, the internal CAN controller of the EVGT actuator has likely failed. Replace the EVGT actuator or the complete turbocharger assembly.

  5. Reassemble

Reconnect all harnesses and the battery.

  6. Calibrate

Connect the EST to clear the fault codes. If a new actuator or turbocharger was installed, perform the necessary turbocharger actuator calibration/learn procedure via the EST.

  7. Test

Run the engine under load to verify that code 3860 does not return and that the turbocharger responds correctly. In rare cases where the wiring and actuator are perfectly functional, an ECM software update or ECM replacement may be required.

Parts you might need
