Case IH 3865 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): EVGT system failure (initialization)

Issue description

The Electronic Variable Geometry Turbocharger (eVGT) actuator is failing to initialize properly upon startup. During the key-on cycle, the actuator attempts to find its end stops. The system logs this fault if the actuator attempts to initialize more than ten times without success, or if there is a CAN communication initialization fault (SRA2EDC frame).

Check the cause

  1. Check the dedicated fuse for the eVGT actuator (e.g., Fuse F-203, 20A) to ensure the actuator is receiving power.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness between the ECU and the eVGT actuator for disconnected cables, broken wires, or short circuits.

  3. With the ignition OFF, disconnect the actuator and ECU connectors (e.g., X-917, X-831) and use a multimeter to check for continuity, high resistance, or short to ground. With ignition ON, verify proper voltage is reaching the actuator.

  4. Remove the actuator linkage from the turbocharger and manually move the VGT vanes to check for mechanical binding or seizing due to carbon buildup.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and disconnect the battery ground if performing wiring repairs.

  2. Resolve Power/Wiring Issues

    If the 20A eVGT fuse is blown, replace it. If multimeter tests reveal a broken CAN wire or short circuit in the harness, repair or replace the affected wiring section.

  3. Address Mechanical Binding

    If the turbocharger vanes are stuck, attempt to clean the turbocharger exhaust housing. If the vanes remain seized, the entire turbocharger assembly must be replaced.

  4. Replace the eVGT Actuator

    If the wiring is intact and the turbo vanes move freely, the eVGT actuator has suffered an internal electronic failure. Remove the mounting bolts and linkage, and install a new eVGT actuator.

  5. Calibration

    Reconnect all harnesses. Turn the ignition ON. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault codes. The new actuator will need to perform a 'learn' procedure to calibrate its position.
