3867

Case IH 3867 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: EVGT system failure (spare) / EVGT system failure (reserve)

Issue description

Indicates a reserved or unassigned sub-failure mode within the engine control software, generally pointing to an internal failure, initialization error, or communication anomaly within the EVGT actuator.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum Series (250, 280, 310, 340, 380)
  • Steiger / Quadtrac Series (425, 475, 525, 555, 595, 645)
  • Puma Series
  • Optum CVX Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify Active Codes: Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EASY tool) to confirm if code 3867 is active and check for accompanying EVGT codes (e.g., 3858 to 3868) that might provide more specific electrical context.

  2. Wiring & Harness Check: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the ECU and the EVGT actuator. Look for chafing, corrosion, open circuits, or shorts to ground/power.

  3. Power Supply Test: Test the EVGT actuator relay and power supply pins to ensure the actuator is receiving proper voltage.

  4. Mechanical Binding Check: Disconnect the actuator linkage (if accessible) and manually move the turbocharger's variable geometry vanes. Ensure they move freely without binding from carbon buildup or mechanical damage.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the machine's battery power before servicing engine electrical components.

  2. Isolate the Component

If the wiring, relays, and power supply test good, and the turbo vanes move freely, the fault is internal to the EVGT actuator.

  3. Remove the Actuator

Unbolt and remove the EVGT actuator from the turbocharger assembly. (Note: On some FPT turbochargers, the actuator is factory-calibrated to the turbo housing and cannot be serviced separately. In this case, the entire turbocharger assembly must be replaced. Consult the specific engine service manual for your exact model).

  4. Install New Parts

Clean the mounting surface and install the new EVGT actuator (or complete turbocharger assembly) using a new gasket. Torque mounting hardware to OEM specifications.

  5. Reconnect

Reconnect the wiring harness and restore battery power.

  6. Actuator Initialization

Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EASY). You must perform the EVGT actuator initialization/learn procedure. This allows the ECU to learn the physical end-stops of the new actuator.

  7. Test

Clear the fault codes and test run the engine under load to verify boost pressure and ensure the code does not return.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • EVGT Actuator

    Manufacturer: FPT / CNH Industrial

  • Complete eVGT Turbocharger Assembly

Required if the actuator is integrated/non-serviceable.

  • VGT Actuator Gasket

Must be replaced to prevent exhaust/boost leaks.
