Case IH 3868 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): eVGT actuator over temperature error

Issue description

The internal temperature sensor of the electronic Variable Geometry Turbocharger (eVGT) actuator has detected temperatures exceeding its maximum safe operating threshold. This can be caused by excessive exhaust gas temperatures, a localized exhaust leak blowing on the actuator, or an internal failure of the actuator's electronics.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Secondary Codes: Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for other active engine codes related to high exhaust gas temperatures (EGT), DPF/SCR restrictions, or coolant temperatures. Fix leading faults first.

  2. Visual Inspection: Inspect the eVGT actuator physically. Look for signs of external heat damage, melting on the electrical connector, or damaged wiring harnesses near the hot side of the turbocharger.

  3. Check for Exhaust Leaks: Ensure there are no exhaust leaks at the manifold or turbine housing blowing hot exhaust gases directly onto the actuator body.

  4. Inspect the Linkage: With the engine off and cooled down, check if the VGT linkage arm moves freely. If the turbocharger vanes are seized due to carbon buildup or heat distortion, the actuator will overwork and overheat.

  5. Check the Power Circuit: Inspect the dedicated fuse for the eVGT actuator to ensure it hasn't blown due to an internal short caused by the heat (e.g., on Optum models, this is Fuse F-203, a 20A mini fuse).

Repair steps

  1. Cool down machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and allow the exhaust system and turbocharger to completely cool down.

  2. Disconnect battery

    Disconnect the machine's negative battery cable.

  3. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the eVGT actuator.

  4. Remove mounting bolts

    Remove the mounting bolts securing the eVGT actuator to the turbocharger housing and disconnect the linkage arm.

  5. Remove actuator

    Carefully remove the actuator. (Note: If the turbocharger vanes are found to be seized during this step, the entire turbocharger assembly must be replaced or rebuilt).

  6. Install new actuator

    Install the new eVGT actuator using new mounting hardware.

  7. Torque bolts

    Torque the mounting bolts to the OEM specification found in the service manual.

  8. Reconnect electricals

    Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery.

  9. Calibrate actuator

    Crucial Step: Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). You MUST perform the eVGT actuator calibration procedure so the Engine ECU can learn the physical end-stops (open and closed positions) of the new actuator.

  10. Test run

    Clear the fault codes and test run the engine under load to verify the repair.
