Case IH 387 – Engine Controller (ENG / ECM): Decelerator or Hand Throttle (STD cab) 5 Volt Supply voltage is too high

This code indicates that the 5-volt reference circuit supplying power to the hand throttle or decelerator position sensor (potentiometer) is reading a voltage that is above normal limits. When the supply voltage is too high, it usually means the 5V circuit has shorted to a higher voltage source (such as a 12V battery circuit) in the wiring harness, or the internal 5V regulator inside the controller has failed.

   Inspect the wiring harness from the Engine ECM to the right-hand console or floor decelerator pedal for chafed, pinched, or melted wires that could cause a short to a 12V power wire.

   Perform a voltage test at the sensor: disconnect the connector, turn key ON (engine off), and measure the 5V supply pin. If it reads significantly higher (e.g., 12V), there is a short-to-power in the harness.

   If the voltage reads exactly 5.0V when unplugged but the code returns when plugged in, the potentiometer itself is likely shorted internally.

   If the harness is completely isolated and tests good, but the ECM is still outputting more than 5 volts on that pin, check for a failed internal 5V regulator in the Engine ECM.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Access the Sensor

   Remove the necessary trim panels on the right-hand fender console or armrest to access the hand throttle assembly (or the floor plate for the decelerator pedal).

   Remove the Potentiometer

   Disconnect the wiring harness from the sensor. Remove the retaining screws (typically M4 x 12mm or M4 x 25mm hex socket head screws) holding the potentiometer to the throttle bracket.

   Install the New Part

   Mount the new potentiometer, ensuring the mechanical linkage/friction device aligns correctly with the sensor's rotary input. Secure the retaining screws and plug in the electrical connector.

   Reassemble

   Reinstall the console covers and grips. Reconnect the battery.

   Recalibrate

   You must perform a throttle potentiometer calibration using the tractor's instrumentation display/monitor. This allows the controller to learn the new sensor's minimum (idle) and maximum (full throttle) voltage values. If this is not done, the tractor may throw calibration errors (e.g., ARM 9031).
