Case IH 3870 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC): CAN Message Not Received From Vehicle Controller - BC2EDC1

This is an Amber-level warning indicating a Controller Area Network (CAN) communication failure. The Engine Control Module (ECM) has timed out while waiting to receive the 'BC2EDC1' data message from the primary Vehicle Control Module (VCM / ADIC / Cab Controller). This means the primary CAN bus circuit is failing to communicate properly between the engine and the rest of the vehicle.

   Determine if the fault is currently active or an intermittent loss of communication (note: logging CAN faults is normal while a control module is being programmed)

   Inspect the wiring and connectors between the Engine ECU and the Vehicle Control Module (VCM/DCU), ensuring connector locks are not broken and securely hold the connectors

   Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for multiple CAN Bus fault codes; if multiple are present, evaluate the entire CAN bus circuit rather than a single module

   With the machine off and battery disconnected, measure resistance between the CAN HI and CAN LO wires (should be approximately 60 ohms). 120 ohms indicates a missing/failed terminating resistor or open circuit; 0 ohms indicates a short

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery before servicing the electrical system.

   Repair Wiring

   If the visual inspection or resistance test revealed damaged wiring (chafing, pinched wires, or corrosion), repair the damaged section of the CAN bus wiring.

   Replace Connectors

   If the connector locks at the ECU or VCM are broken, replace the connector housings/locks to prevent vibration from causing intermittent disconnects.

   Restore CAN Network

   If a terminating resistor has failed (causing improper bus resistance), locate and replace the faulty resistor.

   Clear and Retest

   Reconnect the battery. Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST), clear the fault codes from the modules, cycle the key, and retest the system to ensure the BC2EDC1 message is successfully transmitting.
