Case IH 3876 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Timeout of CAN message TSC1-TR passive
Issue description
A communication failure on the J1939 CAN bus network where the engine controller has stopped receiving the expected torque or speed command messages from the transmission or traction control module within the required timeframe.

Check the cause
Check for Accompanying Codes: Look for other CAN timeout codes (e.g., 3873 for TSC1-TE, 3874 for TSC1-AR, or 3875 for TSC1-DR). Multiple timeouts indicate a global CAN bus failure rather than an isolated module issue.
Inspect the J1939 Data Link: Visually inspect the main CAN bus wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the Transmission/Vehicle Control Module for chafing, pinched wires, or corrosion.
Test CAN Bus Resistance: With the batteries disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic connector. A healthy J1939 network should read approximately 60 ohms (indicating two 120-ohm terminating resistors are intact).
Verify Module Power and Ground: Ensure the transmission controller is receiving proper voltage and has a clean ground, as a powered-down module cannot broadcast its TSC1-TR messages.
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or FPT EASY tool to the 9-pin diagnostic port to confirm if the code is active or stored.
Isolate the Harness
Disconnect the harness connectors at both the Engine ECU and the Transmission Control Module.
Pin-Out the CAN Lines
Perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the two modules.
Check for Shorts
Test the CAN lines for a short to ground or a short to battery voltage.
Repair Wiring
If an open circuit, high resistance, or short is found, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness or replace the affected connector pins.
Check Terminating Resistors
If the CAN resistance in the diagnostic phase was 120 ohms (instead of 60), locate and replace the failed CAN terminating resistor.
Clear and Retest
Reconnect all modules, clear the fault codes using the diagnostic tool, and cycle the key. Start the engine and verify that code 3876 does not return.
