Case IH 3877 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Short circuit to battery error at high side actuator relay with index x = 0
Issue description
The engine control system has detected a short circuit to battery voltage (B+) on the circuit controlled by the high-side actuator relay (designated as index 0). This is typically caused by a wiring short to an external power source or an internal short within one of the connected actuators.

Check the cause
Inspect the engine wiring harness connecting the ECM to the engine actuators for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched harnesses that could allow the actuator power supply wire to touch a constant battery positive (B+) wire.
Disconnect the actuators powered by this specific relay circuit one by one and use a multimeter to check for internal shorts to power within the actuators themselves.
With the battery disconnected and the ECM unplugged, test the affected actuator circuit pins at the ECM harness connector for continuity to battery positive to verify if the short is in the wiring harness.
If the wiring harness and all connected actuators test perfectly fine, check for an internal failure of the ECM's relay circuit.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage during testing.
Isolate the Short
Based on the diagnostic checks, locate the exact point of the short circuit.
Repair the Wiring
If the short is found in the engine wiring harness, carefully open the wire loom, locate the fused/chafed wires, and repair them using OEM-approved heat-shrink butt connectors. Re-loom and secure the harness away from high-heat or high-vibration areas.
Replace Faulty Actuator
If an actuator (e.g., fuel metering unit or VGT actuator) is found to be internally shorted to battery voltage, remove and replace the actuator.
Replace the ECM
If the wiring and actuators are completely clear of shorts, the internal high-side relay within the ECM has failed. Remove the ECM and replace it with a new or remanufactured unit. (Note: A new ECM will require programming/flashing with the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to match the tractor's dataset).
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect the battery, connect the CNH EST diagnostic tool, clear the inactive fault codes, and run the engine under load to verify the code does not return.
