Case IH 3879 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Supply UB3 short circuit to battery failure

Issue description

The engine control system has detected that the voltage on the 'UB3' power supply circuit is unexpectedly high. This usually indicates that the wiring harness has chafed and is touching a live 12V power source, or a high-side actuator relay has failed internally.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness connecting the ECU (specifically Connector X-9001) to the main relay panel for chafed wire insulation, pinched wires, or rubbing against the engine block.

  2. Swap the ECU Main Relay and the Fuel Filter Heater Relay with a known good relay of the same type to see if the fault clears.

  3. With the battery disconnected and ECU/relay unplugged, test the UB3 supply wire for continuity to a constant battery positive (12V) source.

  4. Inspect the ECU and relay connectors for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge a 12V pin to the UB3 supply pin.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Isolate the Circuit

    Disconnect the main engine harness from the ECU and remove the high-side actuator relays (Main Relay / Fuel Filter Heater Relay) from the fuse/relay box.

  3. Trace the Short

    Using a digital multimeter, trace the UB3 circuit wire from the relay block back to the ECU.

  4. Repair the Wiring

    Once the short-to-battery is located (often a melted wire casing touching a live wire), cut out the damaged section. Splice in a new section of wire using weather-resistant heat-shrink butt connectors.

  5. Replace the Relay

    If the wiring harness tests perfectly fine, the internal contacts of the high-side actuator relay have likely fused together, sending constant battery voltage back to the ECU. Replace the relay.

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the ECU, install the new relay, and reconnect the battery. Use a CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool) or compatible diagnostic scanner to clear the inactive 3879 / 687D fault code.

  7. Verify Repair

    Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and that the engine does not experience forced idle or power loss (which is the default protection mode for this code).
