Case IH 3879 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Short circuit to battery error at high side actuator relay with index x = 2
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the voltage on a specific internal relay circuit (designated as index 2) is unexpectedly high, indicating a short circuit to a battery power source.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- Magnum
- Steiger
- Puma
- Maxxum
- Farmall
- combine harvesters
Check the cause
Inspect the engine wiring harness routing from the ECU to the engine actuators for chafed wire insulation, melted looms, or pinched wires bridging an actuator power wire to a 12V battery source.
Perform an actuator isolation test by disconnecting the actuators powered by this relay circuit (e.g., fuel metering unit or VGT actuator), clearing codes, and cycling the key to see if the code changes to an open circuit or short to ground.
Conduct a harness pin-out test with the ECU and actuators disconnected by using a multimeter to check for continuity between the actuator supply pins on the harness and the battery positive terminal.
If the wiring harness and actuators test perfectly, suspect a failure within the ECU's internal high-side relay.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Repair Wiring
If a short to battery was found in the harness, locate the exact point of failure. Cut out the damaged section of wire, splice in a new section using weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors, and re-loom the harness securely away from heat sources or sharp brackets.
Replace Actuator
If the actuator isolation test proved the actuator was internally shorted, unbolt the defective actuator (e.g., fuel metering unit), clean the mounting surface, install the new actuator with new O-rings/gaskets, and torque to OEM specifications.
Replace ECU
If the internal ECU relay has failed, the ECU must be replaced. Remove the harness connectors, unbolt the ECU from its mounting plate, and install the new unit. Note: A new ECU will require dealer-level software (CNH EST) to flash the correct engine dataset and injector trim codes.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the inactive 3879 fault code. Run the engine to verify the code does not return.
