Case IH 3880 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Short circuit to battery error at high side actuator relay with index x = 3

Issue description

The engine's control system has detected that the voltage on the circuit for the high-side actuator relay (specifically designated as index 3) is unexpectedly high. This condition is typically caused by a wiring harness shorting directly to a 12V battery power source, or an internal short circuit within the connected actuator itself.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum series tractors
  • Steiger series tractors
  • Maxxum series tractors
  • Farmall series tractors
  • Axial-Flow combines
  • Case IH excavators

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness between the EDC, high-side actuator relay, and connected actuator for chafing, melted insulation, or exposed wires touching a 12V source.

  2. Test the connected actuator (at relay index 3) with a multimeter for an internal short circuit to battery voltage.

  3. Check the high-side actuator relay for internal shorts or welded contacts bridging battery power.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage during testing.

  2. Locate the Components

Consult the specific machine's electrical schematic to locate the EDC and the exact position of the 'high side actuator relay (index 3)' in the fuse/relay distribution box.

  3. Isolate the Short

Disconnect the wiring harness at both the relay block and the actuator. Test the harness for continuity to the battery positive terminal.

  4. Repair Wiring

If the wiring harness shows a short to the battery, repair the damaged section of the wiring or replace the harness.

  5. Replace the Actuator/Relay

If the wiring is intact, the short is likely internal to the connected actuator or the relay itself. Replace the defective actuator or the high-side relay.

  6. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, connect a diagnostic tool (such as the CNH EST tool), clear the inactive fault codes, and cycle the engine to ensure the code does not return.
