3881

Case IH 3881 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: Short circuit to ground error at high side actuator relay with index x = 0

Issue description

The ECU has detected zero voltage or an excessive current draw on the high side actuator relay circuit, which supplies power to external engine actuators. This is almost always caused by a chafed wire touching the engine block/chassis, an internally shorted actuator, or a failure of the ECU's internal relay itself.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma
  • Maxxum
  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • Axial-Flow 5088
  • Axial-Flow 6088
  • Axial-Flow 7130

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the engine wiring harness from the ECU to the engine actuators for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or areas rubbing against hot/vibrating components

  2. Perform an actuator isolation test by disconnecting actuators (e.g., fuel metering unit, EVGT actuator) one at a time to see if the active fault changes to an open circuit (Code 3885/3886)

  3. Inspect the ECU harness connectors for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the power supply to a ground pin

  4. Measure the resistance of the suspected actuator coils to ground using a multimeter (there should be no continuity between the actuator power pin and the housing/engine block)

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the negative battery terminal before performing any electrical repairs to prevent further damage to the ECU.

  2. Repair Wiring

If a shorted wire was found during the visual inspection, cut out the damaged section and splice in new wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors. Re-loom the harness and secure it away from abrasion points.

  3. Replace Shorted Actuator

If the isolation test proved an actuator is internally shorted to ground, unbolt and replace the faulty actuator.

  4. ECU Replacement

If the external wiring and all actuators test perfectly fine, the short circuit has likely permanently burned out the internal power stage of the ECU. In this case, the ECU must be replaced and flashed with the correct machine dataset by a dealer.

  5. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool) or EASy tool to clear the inactive fault codes and verify the repair.
