Case IH 3881 – Engine ECU (Engine Control Module): Supply UB1 short circuit to ground failure
Issue description
The system has detected a short to ground condition on the UB1 power supply circuit. The UB1 circuit specifically provides power to the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) components (part of the DEF/AdBlue emissions system).
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Steiger T4B
- Case IH 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines (7240, 8240, 9240)
- Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac series (600 Quadtrac)
- Case IH Magnum series
Check the cause
Verify the Fault: Confirm that the fault is currently present and active.
Visual Inspection: Inspect the relevant wiring harnesses and connectors—specifically focusing on the Engine ECU harness and Connector 9001 (Pin 50). Look for physical damage, bent or dislocated pins, corroded terminals, or broken wires.
Harness Flex Test: Flex the wiring harnesses involved while monitoring the system to reveal any intermittent breaks or shorts in the wiring insulation.
Trace the Circuit: Check the wires running from the relays back to the large ECM engine harness connector to ensure nothing has rubbed through the wiring insulation and grounded out against the chassis.
Component Isolation: Disconnect the SCR components powered by the UB1 circuit one by one to see if the short to ground clears, which would indicate an internal short within a specific emissions component rather than the wiring.
Repair steps
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks reveal a rubbed, broken, or melted wire causing the short to ground, repair the wire using an approved harness repair kit or replace the affected harness section.
Replace Faulty SCR Component
If the short is isolated to an internal failure within one of the DEF/AdBlue SCR components (such as a dosing valve or heater actuator powered by UB1), replace the faulty component.
ECU Replacement (Last Resort)
If the wiring harness is completely intact, all pins are secure, and no SCR components are shorted, the Engine ECU itself may have an internal short on the UB1 driver. In this case, the Engine ECU must be replaced and reprogrammed by a certified technician.
Parts you might need
(3)Engine ECU (Electronic Control Unit)
OEM Part Number varies by specific Tier 4B engine application.
Connector 9001 / Harness Repair Kit
Generic fitment for Case IH Engine ECU harnesses.
