Case IH 3883 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Short circuit to ground error at high side actuator relay with index x = 2
Issue description
The control module has detected a short to ground on the high-side driver (the power supply circuit) that provides voltage to a specific actuator or group of actuators. The 'actuator relay' is typically a solid-state driver located internally within the ECU.

Check the cause
Consult the specific machine's electrical schematic to identify which actuators are powered by the 'Supply UB3' (Index 2) circuit.
Disconnect the actuator(s) on the UB3 circuit and use a multimeter to check for continuity to ground on the harness side of the connector.
If the harness does not show a short to ground when disconnected, test the actuator itself for an internal short to ground.
If the short is in the harness, visually inspect the wiring between the ECU and the actuator for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires touching the machine's chassis.
Repair steps
Turn off the machine's ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Ensure the machine is powered down before beginning electrical repairs.
Repair or replace the wiring harness.
Based on the diagnostic isolation test, if the wiring harness is shorted to the chassis, repair the damaged section of the wire using OEM-approved splicing methods and heat-shrink tubing, or replace the affected harness section.
Replace the faulty actuator.
If the actuator itself tested as internally shorted, remove and replace the faulty actuator.
Reconnect all electrical connectors and the battery.
Restore all connections after repairs are complete.
Clear inactive fault codes.
Turn the key to the ON position and use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault codes.
Verify the repair.
Start the engine and verify that the 3883 fault code does not return under load.
Replace and program a new Engine ECU.
If the wiring and actuators test perfectly fine, the internal high-side driver inside the ECU may be permanently damaged, which would require replacing and programming a new Engine ECU.
