Case IH 3883 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Supply UB3 short circuit to ground failure
Issue description
Supply UB3 is an internal power supply circuit (reference voltage) generated by the Engine Control Unit (ECU) to power a specific bank of engine sensors and relays. A short to ground means that the voltage on this supply line is being pulled down to zero because a wire has rubbed bare against the machine's chassis, or one of the components powered by UB3 (typically the Air filter clogging switch or Fuel filter heater relay) has suffered an internal electrical short.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Steiger T4B
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
- Magnum
- Steiger
- Puma
Check the cause
Disconnect the Fuel filter heater relay and the Air filter clogging switch one at a time to see if the short-to-ground fault changes to an open circuit or clears (indicating an internally shorted component)
Inspect the engine wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the fuel filter housing and the air intake assembly for pinch points, chafed insulation, or rubbing against the engine block or frame
Disconnect the main Engine ECU harness connector and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or bent terminals that could be bridging the UB3 supply pin to a ground pin
Repair steps
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery negative terminal
This prevents electrical arcing.
Locate the Engine ECU and trace the wiring harness branch
Trace the branch that leads to the air filter clogging switch and the fuel filter heater relay.
Measure continuity to ground
Use a digital multimeter to measure continuity to ground on the UB3 supply wire.
Repair damaged wiring harness
If the wiring harness is damaged (rubbed through insulation), cut out the damaged section and repair it using OEM-approved environmental splices and heat-shrink tubing.
Replace internally shorted component
If the wiring tests good but the short remains when a component is plugged in, replace the internally shorted component (either the relay or the switch).
Reconnect components
Reconnect all sensors, relays, and the battery negative terminal.
Clear inactive fault codes
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault codes.
Verify repair
Start the engine and run it at various RPMs to verify the code does not return.
