Case IH 3888 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Strong torque limitation from turbo compound active
Issue description
This is a protective engine derate condition. When the turbo compound system's monitoring sensors detect an implausible signal, mechanical failure, or overspeed condition within the power turbine, the engine control module actively limits the engine's torque output to prevent catastrophic mechanical damage to the engine and gear train.

Check the cause
Scan for accompanying root-cause codes using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), specifically looking for code 3290 (Turbo Compound Monitoring - Signal Not Plausible) or other sensor-related faults.
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors for the turbo compound speed/monitoring sensors. Look for chafed wires, shorts to ground, or corrosion that could cause an implausible signal.
Inspect the turbo compound unit for physical damage. Check for excessive shaft play, oil leaks around the turbine housing, or signs of exhaust leaks before the power turbine.
Listen for abnormal gear whine or mechanical noise from the rear of the engine where the turbo compound fluid coupling interfaces with the crankshaft gear train.
Repair steps
Safeguard the Machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.
Drain Fluids
Drain the engine oil and engine coolant, as the turbo compound unit is integrated into the engine's lubrication and cooling circuits.
Remove Exhaust Components
Remove the exhaust piping, heat shields, and clamps connecting the primary turbocharger to the turbo compound power turbine.
Disconnect Lines
Disconnect the oil supply, oil drain, and coolant lines attached to the turbo compound unit. Cap the lines to prevent contamination.
Remove the Unit
Unbolt the turbo compound turbine and its gear reduction/fluid coupling assembly from the engine block. Carefully hoist the assembly away from the engine.
Clean and Prep
Clean all mating surfaces on the engine block and exhaust flanges. Ensure no old gasket material remains.
Install New Unit
Mount the replacement turbo compound unit. Ensure proper gear mesh and backlash alignment with the crankshaft gear train as specified in the 12.9L engine service manual to prevent immediate gear failure.
Reassembly
Install new gaskets and O-rings. Reconnect all oil lines, coolant lines, exhaust piping, and heat shields.
Refill Fluids
Refill the engine with the specified oil and coolant.
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect the battery. Use the CNH EST to clear fault code 3888 and any related codes. Start the engine, check for leaks, and perform a loaded test run to verify the torque limitation has been lifted.
