Case IH 3889 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC: SPI communication Chip 1 defective

Issue description

SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) is a synchronous serial communication protocol used for internal hardware communication. This code indicates a hard internal hardware failure where Chip 1 inside the control module is no longer communicating properly on the internal circuit board.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Optum
  • Axial-Flow 2344
  • Axial-Flow 2366
  • Axial-Flow 2377
  • Axial-Flow 2388
  • Axial-Flow 2577
  • Axial-Flow 2588
  • Wheel Loaders 521F through 1121F
  • Crawler Dozers 1150K
  • Crawler Dozers 1650L
  • Crawler Dozers 1850K
  • Backhoe Loaders 580SN
  • Backhoe Loaders 590SN

Check the cause

  1. Inspect Wiring & Connections: Disconnect the EDC/ECM connectors and check for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins that could disrupt power or ground.

  2. Check Power and Ground: Test the battery voltage and ground circuits supplying the EDC. Severe voltage spikes or poor grounds can sometimes trigger internal communication errors.

  3. Clear and Retest: Clear the fault code using a diagnostic tool. If the code returns immediately upon key-on, the EDC/ECM has suffered a permanent internal failure and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery

    to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Locate the EDC/ECM

on the engine block or firewall.

  3. Carefully release the locking levers on the wiring harness connectors

and unplug them from the EDC.

  4. Remove the mounting hardware securing the EDC to its bracket

    and remove the defective module.

  5. Install the new or remanufactured EDC/ECM

    and secure the mounting bolts.

  6. Reconnect the wiring harnesses

ensuring the locking levers are fully seated and locked.

  7. Reconnect the battery

  8. Connect the CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool)

    to the machine's diagnostic port.

  9. Flash/program the new EDC with the correct engine dataset and software

for the specific machine model. (Note: A blank ECM will not communicate properly with the CAN bus until the engine dataset registration information is programmed).
