Case IH 3891 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): SPI communication Chip 3 defective

Issue description

This indicates an internal hardware failure within the control module. Specifically, the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) microchip designated as "Chip 3" on the module's internal circuit board has failed to communicate or is physically defective.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Optum
  • Steiger
  • Combine harvesters
  • Tier 3 and Tier 4a FPT engines

Check the cause

  1. Perform a hard reset by disconnecting the tractor's battery for a few minutes, then reconnecting it to clear temporary logic lockups or voltage-induced glitches.

  2. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EASy tool) to confirm the DTC is active and not a historic/stored code.

  3. Inspect the main wiring harness supplying power to the ECM for short circuits to the battery (SCB) or short circuits to ground (SCG) that could have caused a voltage spike.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal.

  2. Remove the ECM

Locate the Engine Control Module (typically mounted on the side of the engine block). Carefully disconnect the multi-pin wiring harness connectors. Unbolt the ECM from its mounting bracket.

  3. Repair or Replace

Install a new or remanufactured ECM, or send the faulty ECM to an agricultural electronics repair specialist (such as Ag Express or Titan Systems) for component-level PCB diagnostics and microchip replacement.

  4. Programming

If a new or remanufactured ECM is installed, a dealer technician must use the CNH EASy diagnostic tool to flash the module with the correct engine dataset/software specific to your machine's VIN/serial number.

  5. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the diagnostic tool to clear any residual fault codes.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) Unit

    91764687R

CNH Remanufactured ECU - fits various Tier 4 Magnum, Maxxum, Puma, and Optum models. Always order the ECM based on the engine serial number. Blank replacement ECMs will not start the tractor until they are programmed by a CNH dealer.

  • Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) Unit

    393289A1

ECM Unit Assembly - fits older MX series Magnums like the MX180-MX285. Always order the ECM based on the engine serial number. Blank replacement ECMs will not start the tractor until they are programmed by a CNH dealer.
