Case IH 3893 – ECM: SPI Communication Chip 5 Defective
Issue description
This fault indicates an internal hardware failure within the Engine Control Module (ECM). The Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) is used for short-distance communication between microchips inside the module. A failure of Chip 5 means the internal circuitry is damaged and the microprocessors can no longer communicate with each other properly.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- Tractors
- Combines
- NEF electronically controlled engines (Tier 3 and Tier 4a)
Check the cause
Verify battery voltage and inspect all main power and ground connections to the ECM. Poor grounds or low voltage can sometimes cause internal communication glitches.
Inspect the engine wiring harness for any severe short circuits (Short to Battery / Short to Ground) that could have caused a voltage spike and permanently damaged the ECM's internal chips.
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), document the freeze-frame data, and attempt to clear the code. If the code immediately returns as an "Active" or "Hard" fault, the internal chip is permanently damaged.
Repair steps
Disconnect power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical arcing.
Remove the defective ECM
Locate the Engine Control Module on the side of the engine block. Carefully release the locking levers on the main wiring harness connectors and unplug them. Unbolt the ECM from its mounting bracket.
Install the new ECM
Mount the replacement ECM to the engine block and securely reconnect the wiring harnesses, ensuring the locking levers click into place.
Reconnect power
Reconnect the negative battery cable.
Program and calibrate
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Flash the blank or new ECM with the correct engine software/dataset for the specific machine's PIN (Product Identification Number).
Restore parameters
Follow the appropriate service tool procedure to restore the engine's self-learning parameters and injector trim codes.
