3894

Case IH 3894 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): High Side SCB error and Low side SCG error

Issue description

An electrical fault in the Engine Compression Release Valve (Exhaust Flap Actuator or Engine Brake Valve) where the Engine Control Unit has detected a Short Circuit to Battery (SCB) on the high side of the circuit and a Short Circuit to Ground (SCG) on the low side of the circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • Vestrum series (100, 110, 120, 130)
  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Magnum
  • Steiger series tractors

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the Engine ECU to the Engine Compression Release Valve / Exhaust Flap Actuator for chafed wires causing a short to battery on the high side or short to ground on the low side.

  2. Test the control relay for internal shorts and verify it is functioning correctly.

  3. Verify that the sensor/actuator is mounted correctly and check the connector pins at the valve for corrosion, moisture, or damage.

  4. Check for a 'no load error on power stage' which indicates the wiring could be completely broken/disconnected, or the actuator itself is internally shorted/defective.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent further electrical damage during testing.

  2. Locate the Valve

Locate the Engine Compression Release Valve / Exhaust Flap Actuator on the engine's exhaust system.

  3. Test the Circuit

Disconnect the electrical connector at the valve. Use a digital multimeter to check the harness for continuity back to the ECU, ensuring there is no short to ground or short to battery in the wiring.

  4. Replace the Relay (If Applicable)

If the wiring tests good but the relay is internally shorted, replace the relay.

  5. Replace the Valve

If the wiring harness and relay are in good condition, the internal circuitry of the Exhaust Flap Actuator has failed. Remove the mounting hardware and remove the defective valve.

  6. Install New Part

Install the replacement Engine Compression Release Valve and reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, use a diagnostic scan tool to clear fault code 3894, and run the engine to verify the exhaust flap operates correctly and the code does not return.
