Case IH 3895 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: Engine Compression Release Valve: Short Circuit to Battery error at high side

Issue description

The engine control system has detected that the high-side control circuit for the Engine Compression Release Valve actuator is receiving unexpected voltage, meaning the wiring or a relay is shorted to an external power source (battery voltage).

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the Engine Compression Release Valve actuator for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinched harnesses.

  2. Locate the decompression brake relay in the power distribution box and test it for internal shorts, or swap it with a known good relay of the same type.

  3. With the key ON (engine off) and the actuator disconnected, probe the high-side wire at the actuator connector to check for unexpected battery voltage (12V).

  4. Test the pins on the Engine Compression Release Valve actuator itself to ensure it has not failed internally, causing a short circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage during the repair.

  2. Access the Components

    Locate the Engine Compression Release Valve actuator (typically located on or near the cylinder head/valve cover area) and the associated control relay in the fuse panel.

  3. Repair the Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to battery in the harness, trace the wire back to the ECU. Cut out the damaged section of the wire and splice in a new section using weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors.

  4. Replace the Relay

    If the relay was found to be internally shorted, plug a new OEM relay into the fuse block.

  5. Replace the Actuator

    If the wiring and relay are intact but the actuator itself is internally shorted, unbolt the defective Engine Compression Release Valve actuator, clean the mounting surface, and install the new actuator. Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or compatible diagnostic scanner to clear the inactive 3895 fault code from the EDC.

  7. Test Operation

    Start the engine, bring it to operating temperature, and test-drive the machine to verify that the engine compression brake engages properly and the code does not return.
